Languages & the Media 2022

Iyuno's Nicky McBride, Janine Hoock, Audrey Rouch, Wouter van der Sleen, Jon Everts, Ola Koitla, and Shak Yousaf attended Languages & the Media 2022.

Languages & the Media has been held biennially for 25 years and has established itself as a popular European audiovisual localization conference. It brings together content producers, distributors, and language providers as well as academics and freelancers. The discussion panels, sessions and workshops offer a unique opportunity to network within the localization business and gain knowledge on innovative technologies and trends. It also serves as a good indicator of current moods and expectations of both the producers and viewers.

This year at Languages & the Media, our Iyuno team in attendance included Nicky McBride, Janine Hoock, Audrey Rouch, Wouter van der Sleen, Jon Everts, Ola Koitla, and Shak Yousaf from the Iyuno’s Business Development and Client Operations teams.

We had an exciting opportunity to get an in-depth understanding of the newest technologies which have been integrated into the localization market such as machine translation engines and speech-to-text tools. We participated in fascinating sessions on access services, and it was uplifting to see how the industry acknowledges the need to continually improve the quality of SDH Subtitling (subtitles for deaf or hard of hearing) and Audio Description.

Other primary areas of focus were diversity and inclusivity as well as the necessity for the Audio Visual Translation (AVT) industry to protect these values through the commitment to making non-discriminatory choices for talent and wording in translations, including looking for alternatives to gender-based nouns. The freelance community voiced their concerns around machine translation threatening their income – resulting in healthy discussion on the benefits and drawbacks of modern technology.

Thank you to our friends from Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, and many others who we had the opportunity to connect with. We look forward to the next Languages & the Media.
