The World of Casting: Iyuno Creatives Share Insights at Anime Expo

Anime Expo took over the LA Convention Center this past holiday weekend, packing the multi-building complex with anime fans, cosplayers, and industry professionals looking for innovative new opportunities to connect with audiences world wide.  

For the event’s opening night, Iyuno hosted a lively panel titled “Anime Dubbing: The World of Casting and Voice Acting” that featured voice talent, casting directors, producers, and everything in between. They shared their collective wisdom and insights on the ins and outs of anime dubbing, punctuated by cheers and applause from an enraptured crowd.  

“The first thing we do is research. What is out there? Is there a manga?” said Indu Vasudev, Production Manager. “There’s a lot of reading of manga,” answered Rachael Marino, Supervising Dubbing Producer, “We really make it a point to deep dive and honor a lot of what’s there.” 

Vasudev and Marino were joined by Rachel Slotky and Carrie Keranen, both triple threats in their own rights with experience as casting directors, voice actors, and directors. They shared invaluable advice to prospective voice actors and laid out some common pitfalls that young actors fall into – including mislabeling their auditions videos. 

“This is the number one thing. If you label it wrong, you will get sorted wrong and I will lose your audition,” said Keranen. Rounding out the panel were voice actors Cristina Vee (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir) and David Errigo Jr. (Phineas and Ferb), who reiterated Keranen’s advice. “Don’t give them a really easy reason to take you out.” said Errigo, “Don’t give them the idea that you don’t follow directions.” 

Iyuno’s panel ended with a live demonstration of a “cold read” audition from Vee and Errigo, who played a few rounds of rock, paper, scissors to determine who would be the first to perform. Both actors explained their audition prep process and delighted the audience with their unique interpretations of Fluffer Nutter, a cowboy-inspired cat.
